211121: another reason to improve my french reading. read at least three times. this slim novella is exactly what i want in romance: sensuous, serious, severely impossible. what could seem power imbalance one way, between older man and young girl, is shaped against expectations because of racial discrimination. the prose, in translation, is spare, evocative, elliptical. there are no extraneous aspects, few names, mostly relationships. the autobiographical sense reveals dysfunctional family. of her work, this is my favourite duras...
